Clean water is a human right

The availability of clean water is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Despite being essential to life, not everyone has access to clean water. One such way to preserve water is by recycling waste water and reusing it. This can be achieved only through proper wastewater management.

Wastewater management is essential as a large proportion of it is generated from various industries such as pharmaceutical, textile, manufacturing, food and beverages, etc. that flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused, polluting water bodies and wasting energy, nutrients, and other recoverable resources. There is no limit to how much waste is discharged into nature either, which is turning our planet into an open sewer. This problem of wastewater disposal and management is quite alarming.

Water management is primarily regarded as a sanitation process. The benefits of wastewater management go beyond sanitation; they also promote a healthy community and a healthy planet. In developed countries, 42% of electricity usage in the water sector is already utilized to treat wastewater. However, globally, 80% of wastewater (including urban and agricultural run-off) is still untreated. If all of this wastewater is treated, there will be a huge rise in energy use (UNESCO-WSSM, 2020).

Through wastewater management, clean drinking water is produced, adequate sanitation is provided, renewable energy is generated, and the environment is protected. This leads to healthier and more productive communities, a greater number of livelihood options, and, ultimately, sustainable development. A proper wastewater management system can not only reduce untreated wastewater's negative effects, but also help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals and 169 associated targets aimed at eradicating poverty, protecting the environment, and ensuring that all people live in peace and prosperity. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) started in January 2016 and aim to continue until 2030. One such goal of the SDGs is goal 6.

What does Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation imply?

SDG 6 is an action plan developed by the United Nations to ensure the well being of our planet, which aims to ensure that everyone has access to safe drinking water and sanitation in a sustainable manner.

Understanding the need

These goals are stated in the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. That means we have less than 10 years to achieve these goals. In recent data released by the UN, it was found that if we want to serve the entire planet with clean water and sanitation by 2030, we need to double our efforts.

The UN expresses that it’s crucial for businesses, irrespective of how small or big, to take into account strategies and practices that ensure fewer chemical emissions, improving water quality and lowering the percentage of untreated wastewater. The UN states its governments as well as the private sector's responsibilities in furthering the newly adopted sustainable development agenda.

SpinChem´s contribution

We at SpinChem understand these needs and our responsibilities, and believe in transforming the world by providing an innovative and sustainable solution in the simplest, fastest, most stable and resource-efficient way possible as a catalyst for the global process chemistry industry.

When treating wastewater, SpinChem uses adsorbents or catalysts in a rotating bed reactors (RBR). As one example of our engagement in this is to remove Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and other fluorinated compounds (PFOA etc.) that are found in soil and ground water.

SpinChem´s solution with the RBR technology uses conventional adsorbents designed for the removal of these compounds in leachate or ground water. This is done with the goal of preventing pollutants from entering the environment and cleaning up what's already in nature.

This is one of many different ways SpinChem is contributing to the sustainability. If you would like to know more follow us on LinkedIn for the latest insights.

Let's combat and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals by unlocking this innovative technology at SpinChem.
